LAUGHING
Interactive video installation, 2.01 min, 2003
On the wall of the exhibition space there is the projection of a video
still, a frozen image of the two of us sitting on a sofa. When the
viewer approaches the projection, he or she triggers a motion sensor
that causes the video to start playing. In the video the two of us
are sitting on a sofa and looking out at the viewer. We gradually
start laughing, obviously amused by what we see.
In Laughing we expose and reverse the conventional position of the
viewer. We are being looked at in the video, but at the same time
we are looking at the viewer. The viewer becomes trapped in an unusual
position. The viewer is apparently the reason behind our amusement,
but at the same time he or she is unable to influence our attitude.
The viewer of the installation thus becomes also the subject of the
installation.
