| CECI N'EST PAS UNE FONTAINE C-print, 82 x 120 cm, 2004 Ceci n'est pas une Fontaine (This is not a Fountain) combines two ideas; Duchamp's readymade Fontaine (Fountain) and Magritte's painting Ceci n'est pas une Pipe (This is not a Pipe). By stating "this is not a fountain," we in fact say, "this is not a work of art," which is actually true for the object in the photograph, a functional urinal in a public toilet. However, the concept of Ceci n'est pas une Fontaine makes even this object an artwork after all. |
